Full disclosure: I've read this book before. It's one of my favorites. What I haven't done is have the opportunity to discuss it with other people who've read it.

So I'm REALLY excited. 😁

If you are interested in picking up a copy, you can still do that here and come back when you've gotten through the first 100 pages.

For everyone else - Let's do this!

First things first: Ground Rules.

I'm working under the assumption (although it's not a guarantee) that we are all adults here. So I'm expecting that we can act like adults. Differing opinions foster growth (which we encourage and actively pursue here) - but let's make sure that we are sharing these opinions respectfully.

  • No name-calling, insults, or bullying of any kind.

Secondly, we are all moving at our own paces, so we will be in different places at different times. The goal is for everyone to have the best experience possible as they're reading our selections for the first time. SO - when commenting and participating in discussions:

  • Please be mindful of spoilers.

If you've moved ahead, please double-check that you aren't revealing anything prematurely.

Finally, we are all human beings, and we make mistakes. We learn best in environments where it's safe to sometimes get it wrong. So if one of us falls short on rules 1 or 2....

  • Practice Grace with one another.

If we need more rules, I'll add them as we go.

There will be some trial and error regarding the best format and approach, so feel free to provide feedback as we develop this process.

For now, you will find the questions posted below as comments to begin discussion threads. We may change that in the future depending on how it works.

Now - Let's get started!

Question 9:

Evelyn says: "Intimacy is impossible without trust." What does this bring up for you, if anything?

I identify as a strong female who has had to deal with the patriarchal society we have in the world. It is not a challenge I have lived up to very successfully. I would not be as caviar Evelyn was portrayed but I have been able to identify with Monique over the course of my life so far. Not revealing much here seems. Maybe I am aligned with both after all. LOL

I was not unsettled. This seems like an example of a very prevalent case in the world. I feel I have been able to avoid and navigated successfully over the years with a lot of luck. People take advantage of each other or try to fit in until it becomes untenable and then they turn bitter or self destructive. A lot of coping mechanisms don't work and require help from outside professionals who can help one to grow and become more healthy individuals.

Question 7:

During their lunch, Monique expresses concerns about the ethical implications of Evelyn’s offer.

What might you have done in her position? Whose perspective — Evelyn’s or Monique’s — more closely aligns with your own values and worldview?

My experience has been that one must look out for oneself. Bosses are most often looking out for their own best interests not those of the employee. So Monique's loyality to her company while challenged should not prevent her from gaining something for herself that she wants and needs. Evelyn's motives were her own but when revealed show she was trying to explain her life and make amends for some decisions in her past that had affected Monique's life so negatively. I guess I believe in forgiveness, redemption, and/or good intentions. What makes it hard for me is I can see and have sympathy for both sides of things in most situations. It is hard still to express my own…

Question 6:

Do you have any reaction to the fact that Evelyn was married seven times?

Where do you think that reaction comes from — personal beliefs, societal expectations, or something else?

My reaction was one of mild curiosity. I think our society expects the public figures especially "Hollywood" types to act like that. The circumstances of Evelyn's life seemed to shape how she dealt with marriage. My personal belief is Live and Let Live. One will bear the consequences of their decisions and actions eventually.
