A Role for All Kinds

I've talked about the many ways that diversity is vital and beneficial to us. (If you haven't read my first blog post on this topic, you can find that one here.)

I'm going a step further today by tying that into a topic that's particularly salient for many right now: Social Change.

Many people are uneasy, afraid, upset, or otherwise disturbed at the way things are going right now. With those feelings can come a sense of urgency (something needs to be done now!), aimlessness (what can I do about any of it?), and even shame (I'm not doing enough, I'm not doing the right things).

To all of you experiencing these things, I want to present the Social Change Ecosystem Map.

ree

Designed by Deepa Iyer with the Building Movement Project, this map illustrates how there's a space for each of us to utilize our specific strengths to contribute to the change we'd like to see in society.

I encourage each of you to visit the Building Movement Project website or YouTube channel to learn more about each role and find a space that feels authentic to you, and then give yourself permission to fulfill that role, and know that what you are doing matters, and it counts.

You might be like me and feel more equipped to occupy the space of healer or storyteller, or caregiver. You might be deeply uncomfortable with the thought of being a disrupter. You might have limitations that make it unrealistic to be a frontline responder. THAT IS OK.

You do not need to be all things. You do not need to do it all or fill every role. There is no wrong role to occupy.

Just show up. Show up in the roles that you can, in the ways that you can, in the spaces that you can. Show up and be who you are, and that is enough.
